Mixed Media Artist working with found and recycled vintage fabrics, lace, buttons and beads.

Hello, my name is Elaine Hook and I am a Textile and Mixed Media Artist working from my home studio nestled in the Pennines. Working with free machine embroidery, I then embellish my work with hand embroidery, vintage lace, vintage buttons and beads. Most of my fabric and resources are salvaged from charity shops, friends and my grandmothers hand embroidery and I repurpose and give new life through my own textile designs and imagination.

Some of the vintage linens, lace and hand embroidery belonged to my grandmother and are woven into my own new beautiful textile work. Much of my work is inspired by my travels around the world, the Pennines where I now live and the natural environment around me. I love flora and fauna, the desert, woodlands, hills, dales and waterways. Sewing and hand embroidery feed my soul and I stitch everyday. I love to stitch. I run classes locally that are accessible, sociable and sensitive. Keep on stitching.

About me

I studied Graphic Design at Coventry University (formerly Lanchester Polytechnic) and obtained a 2:1 BA (Hons) Degree and have worked in the arts for most of my working life as a designer, educator, teacher and trainer. I am a qualified lecturer with a Further Education Adult Teaching Certificate and a qualified Montessori teacher in Early Years.

On leaving university I worked in a graphic design studio in the Chilterns as a design studio manager working in advertising, gift wrap design, magazine layout, corporate identity and packaging design. I owned a graphic design agency for many years and went on to teach on the Graphic Design BA (Hons) Degree course at Coventry University and the Foundation in Art & Design at Milton Keynes College. I also taught on the Textile Degree courses at both institutions.

I helped to co-found the Art and Design Foundation Course at Milton Keynes College, was instrumental in helping obtain the BA (Hons) Degree at Milton Keynes College and was the Senior Graphic Design Lecturer. I also taught Business and Professional practice to the design, textile and media degree students.
